Now that school has begun once again I am reminded, rather rudely, I might add, of how much I hate waking up to an alarm. I realize that it is completely necessary for being responsible and for actually waking up on time but to be honest it sucks and I’m not actually very good at it.
I started using an alarm clock when I was in about fifth grade, I would say. I was in my Scooby Doo phase and so naturally I got a Mystery Machine alarm clock that was supposed to honk at me to wake up. It didn’t really sound like honking and the older it got the less like a horn it sounded, but it was effective enough. I had to lay it on its side so that I could see the time from my loft bed and squeeze the tires to turn the snooze on as I couldn’t very well push it down seeing as it was on its side. I think fondly of my first alarm clock, though I’m sure I didn’t like getting up to it much either.
When we moved into the new house I got a new alarm clock. A ‘big girl’ alarm clock if you will; one that didn’t have a cartoon theme. It does, however, have a radio in it. This is not an effective way of waking up. I don’t know how anyone can wake up to a radio alarm. When I got my phone I started using it as a second alarm, which worked really well for the first semester or so… I’m not sure how phone years go but my phone is a little over a year old now and I think it’s starting to give out on me. The alarm doesn’t always work and I have no idea why. It will be set and on and everything but it just won’t go off. You can tell that it hasn’t gone off, rather than me not hearing it, because the power saver, for whatever reason goes off when the alarm does and the light in front just stays on. If the light is off the alarm didn’t go off.
The thing about alarms is that I never get up to them on the first try. I know you’re supposed to but I always press the snooze button at least three times before I actually get up, thus I have to set my alarm for half an hour earlier, at least, if I want to be up in time. Most of the time I’m not anyway. I don’t know if I’ll get better at it as the year goes on or not, but in my experience, it’s all downhill from here. I find that having two alarms helps, especially since I have to open my phone and it shines light at me which helps get me out of my sleepy state. Plus I have to find my phone as it tends to travel one way or another when I sleep. I think, however, that I may be becoming immune to the phone alarm. It doesn’t seem to be doing its job quite so well anymore. >.>
I’m still better than my siblings, however. When we were younger my brother would put his alarm clock on the other side of the room so he had to get up to press the snooze and hopefully, the getting up and walking would help him get out of bed in the morning. It didn’t. He would get up, turn his alarm off, and then go back to bed without any recollection of having done so. Or worse, he would sleep through it all together, letting it blare until either my sister or I got so sick of it that we got up and turned it off. My sister seems to be following in his footsteps now, though. She doesn’t sleep so much at night and she doesn’t get up to her alarm as well, though she’s still better than he is. :p
I think maybe if I made an effort to actually get to bed on time that might help my getting up problems. But then again, you never know. I might just be falling into the same trap my siblings have. Maybe if I’m lucky, things will get better. Perhaps I just need a new alarm, something that I’m not used to and able to ignore. Now if only I could find something not quite so annoying. >.>
