A Point about Points

17 Nov

I’ve been watching YouTube videos all day. Sounds lame? That’s because it is. However, I can’t seem to help myself. There’s just something addicting about YouTube videos. For the most part it’s just silly things that I wish I could do, but can’t, because I’m not that cool.

There two kinds of videos that I tend to watch on YouTube. The first is v-logs. I believe that’s the proper term at least. It’s people standing in front of a camera and talking about stuff. Now I know what you’re thinking. “Wow, that’s really lame. You sit for hours watching people talk to a video camera?” Yes, yes I do. It’s not as bad as it seems though. I don’t watch the bad webcam videos of angsty teenagers whining about their lives. I prefer to watch those which, sort of like this, have a topic on which the host rants about. I’ve found two people whose videos I really enjoy.

The first I found while clicking random videos on the side, somehow… I’m not even sure really. At any rate, as strange as it seems, she’s a mom who talks mostly about mommy things. She does talk about some other stuff as well, movies, fashion, movie, every day stuff, but for the most part it’s what her kids are doing now, what her experiences with preschool and working and whatnot. Why do I enjoy them? I danno. Maybe it’s her stage presence. Maybe it’s my deep down desire to be a mom. Either way she’s fairly entertaining.

The other is a British man by the name of Lloyd who I’m kind of in love with. He’s bearded and wears lots of sweaters and isn’t exactly the person you think of when you think ‘weapons expert.’ Not that he is a weapons expert, but he does seem to know a lot about them. His rants are mostly on myths about medieval weaponry and their usage. He has this quirky way of presenting his information and opinions. He doesn’t really plan out his videos leading to some fun random inputs and add-ons. He will occasionally rant about other things such as grammar, saucepans, psychics and so on. But mostly it’s just weapons and other medieval war items.

Another kind of video I enjoy watching are skits. Some time ago I found an Asian kid who is actually really funny. Many people probably know about the “How to be a Ninja” video which then led to “How to be Gangster” “How to be Emo” and “How to be a Nerd.” Okay maybe you don’t know, but that’s how it started. I’m not sure how I stumbled across it but I was quite obsessed with this kid for a while. His name is Ryan and I guess early on he did a lot of lip syncing to popular songs. He’s kind of a mix between the skit genre of YouTube videos and the V-log genre as he did a lot of rants in his earlier days as well. Lately it’s been mostly skits. A lot of his videos are satires of popular movies, music, celebrities and so on. He even makes fun of his own videos. He and his friend Sean actually got their own movie in 2008 called Ryan and Sean’s Not So Excellent Adventure.

I do intensely wish I could do something like this. I wish I could rant in video form, though I feel I might not be very good at it, I don’t care. I wanna do it. I almost did, actually when I inherited my brother’s computer which can actually take videos with the webcam… except that the webcam no long works. Why? Because it was my brother’s. What does that have to do with anything? His stuff hates me for one. He also isn’t very nice to it for another. But that’s completely off topic. I’m thinking, maybe if I ever somehow magically find employment and get some money I’ll buy a real video camera with which to make videos. I’ve also considered making audio rants but that seems a bit silly to me. Who wants to hear my disembodied voice ranting at them? Maybe I’ll try it anyway.
